Good to see you have a website up and running and to catch up with your news. You may like to visit our website at www.immanuelstreatham.org.uk (or failing that by this entry http://www.davidgrayonline.co.uk/church/,I have been privileged to be at Immanuel & St. Andrew since June but have fond memories of the years in Margate at St. Johns, St. Philip's and as Hospital Chaplain. Thank you for your continued love and prayers. PS Useless information - there are only a handful of churches named for Immanuel ("God with us") rather than the other spelling of Emmanuel which I am told by the language specialists has a wider translation of "God is with us"!

Hi, My husband's grandfather was born in Margate, Kent 1884. He was registered in my mother-in-law's birth certificate at William Doughery Emptage )not too sure of his middle name) His parents were listed at John & Hariet. My husband is currently trying to build our family tree as we have a grandson 5 months and would like to him to know his heritage. I read with interest some of the visitors comments and was wondering if someone who reads my e-mail would be able to assist. Thank you very much. Maria & Bill vanderstraaten

Hi. This is a great site and a credit to the Baptist Church. I was looking to re-kindle my Faith when I found this and it has gone a long way, just finding it, in doing so. I am instantly reminded that a branch of my family lived in Margate at the turn of the last century. In 1901 for instance James Gibson jebb lived with his wife Alice (nee Avent & whose sister became Bingham). His much younger sister Mary Ann Jebb (who was born in Cape Town, S Africa) was staying with their sister Lilian Powell ( nee Jebb). I believe that Mary Ann later married and became Davies Jebb and lived in Strood having a little girl called Everhilda but cannot be absolutly sure. Would dearly love to hear from this branch of the family.I have been trying to find birthplace of Alice V Jebb born 1900c (probably Thanet but not sure)and have some information which could be quite poignant for any members of the family left. Many, many thanks.

What a fantastic site. You are to be congratulated, it is excellent. My reason for visiting? I enjoy genealogy and have been tracing my roots for a number of years on and off. My grandparents Charles Jones and Doris Fidler were married here on 19th September 1931. I know Margate well having lived in neighbouring Broadstairs for 36 years before moving to Norfolk. This church site is the best I have encountered, well done.

I'm very pleased to have found this interesting site of St John's. My great grandmother Elizabeth Maria Mercer was married at St John's to George Wall on January 1st 1850. Her father was Samuel Mercer, a grocer living at 57, High Street, Margate. His brothers John and William lived at 65, High Street. I am interested in hearing from anyone researching the Mercer family.

A most enjoyable and interesting history of your beautiful church of St John. Within whose walls were baptised my late father, James Robert Saunders, 23 Oct 1910 and his late brother Frederick John Saunders in 1912. And I have no doubt that my grandparents and all my Margate ancestor's did the same, and the church records will probably show that they also exited this life from your church also. I would so like to find out, just who they were. A really enjoyable visit, and one that I will make again. My thanks and good luck to you all. God's blesings upon you, Jimmy Saunders

Congratulations and thanks for your excellent and very informative website. Your church history was of special interest to me since William & Mary Ingmire -- ancestors of mine 5 generations ago -- lived in Margate, attended your church, and their five sons were baptized at St. John's between 1799 and 1808, according to our old family records. Seeing and reading about their church on your website was a wonderful experience.

Today I attended the funeral of a dear chum, Nigel Clarke, based around a service held at St John's and a burial at Margate Cemetary. Nigel was delightfully gay, and I think a lot of the mourners were expecting some divine condemnation of that, to the point where some of the gay or lesbian mourners had to be convinced of their welcome by fellow mourners rather than stand outside. The service was pure sterling, the Reverend, whose name I don't know, was an absolute gem. He spoke of the man we all knew, his hopes, aspirations and fears. Also we were given the rather wise instruction to take the joy that this man gave us and carry it, we've been passed the ball and we might run with it. The service in it's entirity was uplifting and helped to address the guilt and shock that just about every single mourner, rightly or wrongly, seemed to feel. I can only hope that I might have such a wise soul preside over mine. A lot of the mourners were moved enough to claim that they'd like to make a donation but as the majority of them aren't regular church-goers they simply didn't recognise the collection plate. Maybe we can strike up a collection? I think St. Johns deserves it on this service alone. Nigel didn't strike me as regular church-goer at all, but his day-to-day demeanour was so even handed that he might have been the greatest christian I ever knew so I appreciate that his service was lead by one of the finest ministers I ever heard. May your God go with you,

We were married in your church 41 years ago by a great friend Dean S.A.Odom - always called him Sodom, he lived next door to us in St. Peter's Road. A really good man of the Church but was well able to understand the working man -not many clergy of the time could. We used to go to the presbeytry, (always offered a wine) he had a rack of pipes, one for each day of the week. Good bloke!! Will again come to UK in Aug/Sept this year. It would be nice to see if the church has changed much inside - We hope not. I seem to remember the lecturn had a very large eagle surmounting it.

Thankyou for a lovely site I was christened confirmed and marriad in this loveley church. Wendy

Really interesting website. My ancestors came from Margate and many of them married and had their children baptised at St John's. The earliest I have are my 5 times Great Grandparents Stephen Gore and Sarah Dawson who married here 7 October 1747. It is really wonderful to be able to see the church that they all attended.

Very interesting. Brings back memories of school holidays spent with my uncle during the 1930s in Hatfield Road and, later, Wellis Gardens.

My Grandparents (BREWER/DEVERILL) had memories of Margate. Thanks to you I can now appreciate the early days and conditions. Well done!

Congratulations on a very interesting site. It was good to read about the church in the area where at least two generations of my family (Mothers side name of Haggis)lived & possibly worshipped.

Thank you for making a great site. It is great to see where my Great Grandfather THOMAS ERNEST COUZINS was baptised 4 December 1881, he was the 2nd son of William Richard COUZINS & Elizabeth Emma Bamford. Would love to hear from other people looking for the same families.

Thank for creating a wonderful web page. It has been marked as a favorite site. My ancestors the Mummery's of Margate had many links to St.John. Am interested in hearing from anyone who may be researching the Mummery family.

I was very interested to read about a church where my husband's ancestors were married, baptised and buried. I am trying to find out more about the MINTER family - while my husband's great-great grandfather, Martin Minter was baptised at St Peters (1799), his older siblings were baptised at St John, and his parents, Henry and Sarah (?Philpott), were probably married there in 1790. Have you published a booklet on this history? - if so, I'd like to purchase a copy.

Very much enjoyed your site. My wife and I passed through in the fall of 1999. Unfortunately we had little time to enjoy the sites. I am a descendant of Simon Sackett who emmigrated to the Mass. Colony circa 1630 and was a first settler of Newton, later to become Cambridge, MA. His first wife, Elizabeth Boyman, died 1625/26, and is buried at St. John's. Simon married his second wife, Isabel Pearce, at St. John's August 6, 1627. I hope to make a return trip soon and spend more time enjoying the area and places of my Ancestors.( Aside to any Pearce Family members, Isabel journied to Hartford with Rev. Thomas Hooker in 1636 after Simon's death in 1635, and became one of the first settlers of that city, now the capitol of CT.Her children, Simon and John Sackett were among the first settlers of Springfield and Westfield, MA respectively.)

An excellent site. The history pages tell me things I did not know, even when I was an altar server and youth club leader there in the mid 1940's. Mervyn Armstrong was my super Vicar, Mr Shallcross choirmaster. Thank you for publishing this site. StJohn's church and school (Headmaster Mr Graham) were central to my life through the later war years and after until called away on National Service. The last time I was back there was to return for my father's funeral in January 1967. It is good to see that StJohn's still has an active and lively community.

As a committee member for the Thanet branch of the Kent Family History Society may I congratulate you on the new site, it is very informative and well presented. I was interested to read that my Paramor family were involved with the new spire built in 1875. Look forward to reading more monumental inscriptions.
